Duration of Divorce: How Long Do the Procedures Take?

Published on 01-30-2026

Divorce procedures begin with the family guidance session, which usually takes from two days to two weeks depending on appointment availability. This procedure aims to attempt reconciliation between the spouses. The duration may extend if the counselor needs additional sessions. This stage is mandatory before filing the lawsuit. The duration varies by emirate.

1) **Duration of Family Guidance**

Divorce procedures begin with the family guidance session, which usually takes from two days to two weeks depending on appointment availability. This procedure aims to attempt reconciliation between the spouses. The duration may extend if the counselor needs additional sessions. This stage is mandatory before filing the lawsuit. The duration varies by emirate.

2) **Duration of Registering the Case in Court**

After reconciliation fails, the case is registered in court within a day or two. The court sets a first session within approximately two weeks. Appointments may be delayed during busy seasons. Registration marks the beginning of the official litigation phase. The court begins studying the file immediately.

3) **Duration of Judicial Sessions**

Sessions usually take from one to three months depending on the complexity of the case. The court may require additional evidence or social reports. Both parties are given the opportunity to submit defense memos. The clearer the evidence, the faster the judgment. The duration varies from case to case.

4) **Duration of Issuing the Preliminary Judgment**

After sessions are completed, the judge issues his ruling within two weeks to a month. The preliminary judgment is subject to appeal. The court explains the reasons for the ruling in detail. Implementation of the ruling begins upon its issuance. The duration may be longer if the case is complex.

5) **Duration of Appeal**

The affected party can appeal the ruling within 30 days. The Court of Appeal takes from two to four months to issue the final ruling. Afterwards, the ruling becomes final and enforceable. This stage is a guarantee of justice.

6) **Total Duration of Divorce**

In simple cases, divorce may take from two to three months. Complex cases may extend to six months or more. The duration varies depending on the evidence, cooperation of the parties, and type of case. The goal remains to achieve justice as quickly as possible.
